Doro Buch and Jacqueline Huskisson

During our two-month residency (July/Aug 2021) with Sparrow Artspace we will be exploring the potential of animation and projection. We will create a lab within Sparrow Artspace where we will be sketching and experimenting with slow-motion capture of a “moving mural.” Our aim is to work towards a final projection project that can be used as a guerilla art piece in downtown Calgary. At the end of the residency we will have a closing exhibition showcasing all of our sketches, paintings and as well a sneak peak of the animation projection.

 Doro Buch

I’m a Calgary based visual artist. Originally a social scientist, I blend the curiosity about our society with my passion to paint. When painting, I am considering dynamic compositions - combining realism with abstraction. I create collage like arrangements juxtaposing the imaginary, symbolic, and the real, in both oil and acrylic. The colors and shapes follow the intended message. My work touches upon social, political, environmental, or human issues.

I get my inspiration from everyday scenes, news, by talking to a friend or a stranger or listening to music. Music has been especially important in my work recently.  Songs have inspired my curiosity.  I am interested in the interaction between music and visual art and how to combine both to complete the other.

I am an interdisciplinary artist from Calgary, Alberta. In 2011 I received my B.F.A in printmaking from the Alberta College of Art and Design. In 2017 I received my M.F.A from the Belfast School of Art, N.Ireland. I have been doing various projects, residencies, installations and exhibitions locally and across Canada. As well as various international locations such as Northern Ireland, United States, Germany and Finland. I have been the recipient of various local and national grants and was the inaugural recipient of the Scott Leroux Media Arts Exploration fund. I have an upcoming solo exhibition (Spring 2022) with Helmut in Leipzig, Germany.

With my art I aim to create an impression, a lasting reflection of an abstract emotion in the viewer, a reflection of their place in the universe. I do this by surrounding the viewer in the art, engulfing them in the medium such as wallpaper, murals, and engrossing comics. I am interested in exploring the line between reality and fiction; too create my own interpretation of where that line is. My artworks are ultimately questions to viewers about their own perceptions on modern life, the human condition and an active study of my own personal situation.
