Making A Mark: The practice of our shared creativity in community: Jane Finley and Colleen Doylend

Jane Finley and Colleen Doylend will weave collage, painting, photography and printmaking from their individual and collaborative artistic practices and engage in a multifaceted exploration of creativity and community engagement. They are working this month on the modest act of mark making. What marks the making of a collaborative work? How might we make marks on a surface? How do we make marks in other’s minds with our creative effort? They welcome your visit from the neighborhood and beyond, to see the show and work in progress, have a snack, and contribute to the creative endeavours in a special community collage project.

Making a Mark | A Community Art Piece

Thursday to Saturday in August, 11am-6pm, FREE, drop-in

Throughout August, Jane Finley and Colleen Doylend will be working with you, our friends and neighbours, for an engaging act of mark making in the creation of a community collage project. We welcome the neighbourhood and beyond. See the exhibit and studio work in progress, have a snack, and contribute to the community collage.

Colleen Doylend

Artist-photographer-printmaker, Colleen Doylend, observes and records the fragility of our environment. She draws on delicate and profound form, colour, and texture while attempting to hold still the oft-subtle organic impacts of air and light atop the complexity of sea and land. Art residencies have included the exploration of photography, printmaking, writing, and theoretical study. Resulting productions consider the presentation of nature as expressed through mood. Her potent skies and atmosphere in various landscapes examine a world in deep transformation. Throughout this residency Colleen will expand her works through mark making, drawing, printmaking, collage and paint.

Jane Finley

Jane Finley’s artistic practice is grounded in the tangible yet transformative nature of large-scale mixed media paintings.

Working with acrylics, drawing, photo transfer, collage, and found objects, she crafts abstract landscapes that serve as windows into the intricate tapestry of everyday life, nature, and culture. Jane delves beyond the surface of physical landscapes, probing into the cultural and narrative dimensions that define a place. Each piece becomes a testament to the interconnectedness of human experience, celebrating the

nuances of both the banal and the extraordinary. Beyond her studio, Jane uses art as a catalyst for community connection and empowerment.
