Mixed Media Mixer: Altered Books Workshop

Join artists Ana Zanella and Veronica Funk in this introduction to the world of mixed media art journaling through altering books. Utilizing reclaimed and recycled materials along with a large selection of supplies we will guide you in creating a beautiful and personal book while learning a variety of mixed media techniques.

Altering books is a wonderful way to save books, repurpose and give them a new life in a beautiful way by recycling damaged or irrelevant books. Creating an altered book is like creating a beautiful journal filled with personal memories.

The supplies required are really flexible. The fun thing with this creative process is just that…it’s extremely creative and open to all sorts of ideas. Wandering through hardware, craft supply and dollar stores, paying attention to what draws your attention or little gifts, cards or items such as receipts, paper napkins, postcards or business cards often end up working beautifully in an altered book. We will provide you with a book as well as a variety of materials available for you to use.
 
Supplies provided:
●    Gesso, acrylic paint, watercolour, ink pads, markers, pens, pencils
●    Hole & paper punches, scissors, x-acto knife, stapler, rubber stamps, stencils
●    Clear contact paper, tissue paper, paper napkins, magazines, scrapbook paper, washi tape, fabric, ribbons or yarn
●    Gel media, glue sticks, tape (optional: modge podge)
●    Palette, water dish, cotton rags, spray bottle, paint brushes, heat guns

  • Intro and creating handmade papers

  • Examples of Themed books, variety of subjects

  • Creating & incorporating collage papers with gelli plate in your favorite colors or with acrylic paint watered down for watercolour look

  • Decorating the cover of your book: using magazines and other found paper, and paint

  • Choosing on a theme

  • Creating texture in your bookStencils, collages, modeling past and paint

  • Using Photographs in your book; photo transfers

  • Creating windows & pockets

  • Adding embellishments; Lace, ribbons, buttons, tags, a book inside the book

 
Ana Zanella is a life-long artist based in Calgary who has a focus on abstraction in art, utilizing colour, pattern and texture in mixed media work, exploring how different mediums can be incorporated. Veronica Funk has been a professional artist in Alberta for over 25 years. Collaboration and shining a light on the challenges and accomplishments of women are passions of her. Her artistic focus has shifted towards storytelling, with a particular emphasis on celebrating the lives and stories of women through portraiture.
